Solar-Powered Schools: What We Learned After 50 Installations

Fifty school installations in, DollarEdge's Green Energy team has learned as much about logistics and community buy-in as about solar panels themselves.

The technical lessons

Battery storage sizing matters more than panel wattage in most rural sites — schools need power for evening study sessions and boarding facilities, not just daylight hours. Undersized batteries were the single biggest cause of early system disappointment.

Maintenance has to be local

Systems installed with a trained on-site caretaker had dramatically fewer support calls than those relying on remote technicians. We now train at least two staff members per school before handover.

The impact is bigger than electricity

The most consistent result across all 50 sites: measurable increases in evening study time once classrooms and dormitories had reliable lighting. Several head teachers reported improved exam performance within two terms.

What's next

Through our partnership with Green Energy for All (GE4A), DollarEdge is scaling this model to more counties in 2026, with a focus on schools that currently have no grid connection at all.
